How you can help:
- Email monitor@prwd.org or call the office at 218-846-0436 to register as a helper. This will help staff assess who is helping and we will add your name to a list for no-charge disposal at the Becker County Landfill.
- Pickup what you can when you can. If you see debris while you are boating, pick it up and dispose of it using the methods below.
- Mark what you see and can’t reach.
- If you have navigation that can log points, mark them and send them to monitor@prwd.org when you return to shore.
- If you have google maps, share points with prwdinfo@gmail.com.
- Send an email to monitor@prwd.org or call the office at 218-846-0436 with a description of what you see and where, (i.e. off of Oakland Beach in front of the brown house with the white porch, or off of Floyd Point, Bill Smith’s house. We can find the address from county records.)
Assemble Your Team:
The best way to spot items is to snorkel. A lot of the material, especially shingles, can’t be seen from the surface.
A good team consists of:
A captain – to drive the boat or pontoon.
A co-captain – to watch your swimmer, communicate with the captain, and take debris from the swimmer.
A diver – to swim along the surface, spot debris from in the water, and retrieve.
Pull up Debris
- If available, equip your swimmer with a mask and snorkel. Gloves and water shoes are also recommended.
- The materials will be messy and wet. Grab a tarp to lay on the bottom of your pontoon or boat to lay materials on.
- Have the swimmer snorkel around and area to assess the bottom.
- Shingles will look like a dark patch in the weeds. White text on the shingles is a sure way to ID them.
- Light areas can be tin, soffit, or siding. Oak leaves also show up as a lighter color. If they are more than 3 feet under water, please leave downed branches, it is good fish habitat!
- The diver can retrieve as much as possible. As they pull materials, the water will cloud with silt making it tough to get everything. If there is a lot remaining, but visibility is low, do your best to document the location (see No 3 under ‘How you can help’.
- WATCH your swimmer. Make sure the captain knows where the swimmer is at all times.
- Divers should wear protective gloves and shoes. Shingles come with nails and staples and the tin is very sharp.
Please be respectful of landowners. The beach and land at this address is private property. Stay in the water unless you have permission from the homeowner.
AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES NOTE:
The materials you pull up from Floyd will have attached invasive ZEBRA MUSSELS. Please be sure to clean your boat and gear thoroughly before heading to other lakes.

PRWD will be scheduling a cleanup each week in August on Thursdays launching from the access at 1:00 pm. We will have both of our trucks available to haul materials. Join us if you can!

By registering to volunteer, you acknowledge that the post-tornado cleanup in, on, and around Lake Floyd involves potentially dangerous conditions and you agree to waive all liability against the Pelican River Watershed District (the “District”). This includes voluntarily assuming all risks and releasing the District from any claims for personal injuries sustained in, on, or around the water, or any damage caused to your boat, watercraft, or personal equipment.
